Anne Charlap

from Ramsey, NJ

I am the mother of a 14-year-old daughter who was diagnosed at age 11. I always new she was an angry or difficult child, but at age 11, she tried to commit suicide and was sent to Four Winds (a child hospital in Katonah, NY). She is smart, funny and interesting. And here I am: the crazy girl's mom, isolated in the suburbs.

Looking back, what could have been done at the time to improve the situation? Treatment, medication, a different approach, or understanding from others around you?

Respite care, not being told how to deal with your child, even by friends, sibs, parents, everyone!
