ROY ZUNIGA, Vietnam veteran
FT.WORTH, TX, U.S.

I was drafted into the Army in April the 16th 1968. My friend and I volunteered to be drafted earlier than the time we would have been drafted. My feelings were mixed about going to Vietnam. I was naturally scared to go but I had a sense of excitement about going over there. I did think about going to Mexico or Canada but I am glad that I didn't. I was lucky that I did not get to see much combat. I was a truck driver and I experienced getting mortar-attacked 2 or 3 times at the most and that was the extend of that. I really never thought too much of what was morally right as to what we were doing. I thought we were there to help South Vietnam from the spread of communism. I was glad to leave when I did 11 months 23 days from the day I got there but I will never forget the time I spent there.
