In December of 1955, Thurgood Marshall married Cecilia "Cissy" Suyat, a secretary for the NAACP. Suyat, who is Filipino-Hawaiian, was at first reluctant to marry Marshall. She feared that an interracial marriage might attract negative attention to both the NAACP and Marshall. In typical fashion, Marshall's response was, "So what?"

The couple had two boys, Thurgood, Jr. and John. Justice and Mrs. Marshall remained married until Marshall's death in 1993.
