While attending the prestigious, all-black Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, Thurgood Marshall and his peers were encouraged to attend church. He chose Cherry Hill Church "not so much for religious salvation," says Marshall, "but [because] that's where all the pretty chicks were." There he met Vivian "Buster" Burey, a student from the University of Pennsylvania. Marshall and Burey married on September 4, 1929.
