With 21 percent of the global GM crop area (nine million hectares), Argentina ranks second only to the United States in GM crop area. The major crops: herbicide-resistant soybean, and insect-resistant (Bt) corn and cotton. Unlike their counterparts in the US, Argentine farmers openly save seed from their GM crops to plant the next crop. US patent law bans seed-saving and requires farmers to purchase new GM seeds every year. But in Argentina, Monsanto has not obtained a patent on its herbicide-resistant (Round-Up Ready) soybeans.
