Adoption stories

Birth Country: South Korea
Decade of adoption: 2000 or later

My husband and I have adopted our two sons from Korea. The adoption process is an interesting journey for parents. We were surprised by the number of emotional ups and downs along the way.

Naively, we expected to fill out some paperwork, wait a few months and get a call to pick up our son. But it doesn't work that way at all.
For example, when we received the referral for our oldest son, which included his photo, we immediately bonded to the picture. We didn't realize how attached we were to the photo until the adoption agency called us two weeks later to tell us that they had given us the correct information but the wrong picture. So the little baby in the photo was not our son! We were devastated. When we picked up the correct photo, I remember sobbing because he looked nothing like the other baby.

Of course it did not take us long to attach to the beautiful boy in the correct photo who is our son, but every once in a while, I think of the other baby in the photo and wonder where he is.
Some people say that the birth of a baby is a miracle, but I think that even more miraculous is the adoption of a baby. We can't imagine our family any other way.
